Will Wave Browser be Safe in 2026?

Wave Browser is safe when downloaded with intent from its official website and/or app store. Do not store if it was installed on your computer without your consent. This is the reason why this answer is split, as the browser has a quite different reputation. A January 2026 article from SourceForge calls it certified, transparent and secure, and certain anti-virus companies have classified it as a potentially unwanted program. This is a walk-through on both sides to make your decision with the facts.

Wave Browser is a web browser developed by the Wave company. The Wave company develops Wave Browser.

Wave Browser is based on the open source project Chromium that is the foundation for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. What that translates to in reality is that the pages will render the same, modern web standards will be respected and browser security patches will be downloaded and applied from the Chromium code base. According to the article published on the SourceForge site by the Community Team on 29 January 2026, Wave is a mission oriented browser that works with the ocean cleanup organization 4ocean. It is available for Windows and Mac and there are versions available on Google Play and the Apple App Store.

Chromium base is a good one, but it does not resolve the safety issue. It is used by both good and bad browsers. The only things they differ on are how they are installed, what they change on your device, and how they treat your data.

What is the safety claim that SourceForge makes about Wave?

The article has 5 major claims. The first is independent verification: Wave has passed AppEsteem Certification for installation, behavior, data handling, transparency and removal. The second one is an inbuilt ad blocker for reducing misleading ads, pop-ups and adware. The third is user control. Users have the ability to set their tracker and cookie preferences, run in the incognito window, and choose which sites can access their cookies and which search engine they’ll use by default. The fourth one is no hidden behaviour, no additional programs, no forced changes to the system and no changes to the settings without the user’s knowledge. The fifth is a sidebar equipped with tools; the less you need to depend on third party extensions that could be asking for more information than they need.

The latter is good general practice for any browser. One of the most frequent avenues for leaking data is extensions and fewer add-ons equates to less risk surface.

So what is the meaning of AppEsteem Certification?

AppEsteem is a software certification body that Wave Browser safety based on guidelines that help ensure consumers are protected from deceptive practices. The article says a certified product must install correctly and not be able to conceal other software, function correctly, not lead people to believe that it is something it isn’t, uninstall without interfering with other software, honor privacy, and display all disclosures. The article also states that the certification is not automatic and has to be renewed as updates roll out and that the Wave listing is public on AppEsteem’s database.

That public listing is the bit that’s helpful. The word of your vendor is not gospel as you can check the vendor record yourself before installation.

What is the reason that some security companies continue to flag Wave browser?

    Wave Browser safety

That’s where things get tricky. Wave Browser is detected by Malwarebytes as PUP.Optional.Wave is potentially unwanted program. It can be detected in the traces like WaveBrowser shortcuts or folders called Wavesor Software. The other guides, like Help Desk Geek and NordVPN, state it in a layman’s language: Wave isn’t a virus, yet it’s hard to remove and has a history of being packed with free software.

PUP is not malware. Typically, it involves software which is superficially functional, but infiltrates a device via dubious methods or alters settings that a user was not aware of. Also, several guides highlight that the name Wavesor Software is associated with various company names. In fact, two different sites exist on the web – wavebrowser.co and wavebrowser.com, and they are not the same, says Help Desk Geek.

I can’t say from various sources whether these newer releases have addressed all the complaints. A fair statement is that the SourceForge article is about the product as it is today, while many of the warnings are about bundled installs or sites that are similar. This is an “inference” and not a fact; use it with caution.

How to Check for Authenticity of your Wave Copy?

Always begin with the source. If you selected the Wave option and downloaded it from the official website, Google Play or the Apple App Store, you are in a much better position than if you’ve found it in your list of installed programs.

Then, go to AppEsteem’s certified page (linked in the SourceForge article) and view the vendor record. After that scan it with a security tool that you trust (Microsoft Defender or Malwarebytes) to check if it flags your installation. Once you’ve done that, you’ll go to settings and make sure that your home page and default search engine are both set to your desired ones. Any article, if there is anything that has changed, is a warning sign.

Who’s using Wave Browser and who’s not?

If you prefer an ad blocker integrated into the browser, if you want to help clean up the oceans, and you’re okay with downloading from a trusted site, then Wave might be for you—unless the certification turns out to be bogus on verification. However, if Wave has infiltrated your system without your consent, if your search engine changes without your permission, if you do work that is sensitive — like banking or client information — then the safe choice is to stick with the browser you intentionally selected and know. The internet, and the sites on it, are primarily the domain of browsing and browsing should be where trust is earned, not given.

    Conclusion

Wave Browser is in a strange place. The same side claims it has Chromium foundations, AppEsteem certification, user controls and it’s clean uninstall. Security vendors cite a PUP detection, bundled installs. Yes, both are true at the same time, but depending on which version and where.
